(Week 5) Implementing rhythm mechanic!

Learning how to make a rhythm game

One of the most important things we have in our to-do list for this week was to finally start working on the rhythm mechanic for the game. With no experience, we put all our faith that out there was a tutorial that could teach us everything about rhythm games in Godot... but that tutorial was never found.

Searching and searching we came across a YouTube video where someone showed how to make a rhythm game using the great power of a MIDI plugin for Godot. This video was of great help, but lacked important information on its solution. However, this was a great start, and after long hours of debugging the game and questioning our life choices, we finally understood (or at least we think so) how to make it work. And for the last touch, we search in Open Game Art for some music in MIDI format.

Unfortunately, this week we only managed to finish one of the three task we proposed ourselves last week. But that's okay, sometimes you have good weeks, while on other weeks you have to deal with a rhythm system built by your own hand, but still have no idea why now isn't working. All this said, now you can play and test this new rhythm mechanic, by downloading this new update! You can play the notes by pressing left click for the left notes and right click for the right ones.

Next week To-do

  • Fix rhythm mechanic synchronization with music. Now it isn't as accurate as we would like.
  • Add player's instrument sprite.
  • Allow player to shoot musical notes by playing correctly.

Thanks for sticking around and reading this week's rhythmic adventure :D. See ya next time with more updates!
